Professor Hugh Wilford

Professor Hugh Wilford is a professor of United States History at California State University, Long Beach. He was born and educated in the United Kingdom, where he received degrees from Bristol University and Exeter University. Prior to moving to Long Beach, he taught for fifteen years in the British university system, including Middlesex University in North London and Sheffield University. A historian of twentieth-century US culture and foreign relations, he has written or edited five books, including most recently The Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA Played America (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2008) and America’s Great Game: The CIA’s Secret Arabists and the Shaping of the Modern Middle East (New York: Basic Books, 2013). His work on the CIA has been widely discussed in major US and UK newspapers and has featured on a number of TV and radio shows. He is looking forward to returning to England and sharing his experience of British life with students on the London Spring Semester program.
